I think my dog (3 months old) has a silky coat also. His hair is perfectly straight - still thin - and never matts. And, I have to bathe him at least once a week because he has an oily coat. I'm hoping that when he gets "more hair," this won't be so bad.
He sure can look scruffy though - but it is scruffy in the cutest way....you know "the all-American mutt look."
I plan to keep my dog short. However, I do want to grow him out a little just once to see how he does. I'm going to wait until he is older before I do this.
A lot of breeds definitely do go through "an ugly puppy stage" -- My Bichon did and my Pom/Poodle did also. But with both of them --their first trip to a groomer made a big difference.
