The condition of eating strange things is called "pica." There's not a lot of research on it, some think it's a mineral deficiency, and this is more likely when the obsession seems to be based on one or two things. It's common in humans as well, especially in pregnant women. It is also considered a behavioral disorder, but I believe physicals causes should be ruled out first.
