I started by ringing the bell every time we went out. I would say "potty" every time I rang the bell. After a week or so, I started touching her paw to the bell each time we went outside, then praised and treated her each time. I think it took a couple weeks, then she started associating it with going out to potty. But be forwarned, when they first learn it, they love to ring it every five minutes just to watch you jump up and go let them out, lol!!! She had me jumping up a LOT, lol. They do get used to it though, especially when you keep it to only going out for potty when praising for using the bell.
