Default Defending their Mommy

I have a quick question. Yesterday, we had a friend come over with her little girl (another yorkie, 4 weeks older). Bri and Roxy warmed right up and played for a long time. However, Bri got tired and wanted to sit in my lap, so I picked her up. Well, Roxy decided she wanted to sit too and jumped in my lap. She started giving me kisses and Bri immediately attacked and started getting really nasty towards her. I was so shocked. Bri shares my attention all the time, she has a brother and has never been that mean before.

Is this normal? For a dog to "protect" or "defend" their mommy? It was like she was telling Roxy that this was her mommy and to get away!

We separated them for a little while, but before long they were playing and having fun. I was just shocked!
