I agree with Barb on the 1% milk. There is a recipe on here called whelping pudding. I'm sorry, I don't have it off the top of my head but I'm sure you can do a search and easily find it. Now just make sure she get's enough calcium and food in general. Good luck on your babies! By the way, how big were they?
Yes, I am pretty sure it is because of her age. Her puppies are very tiny. I couldn't get an accurate weight because my scales were so sensitive and they were really active right after birth. The vet agreed that the size of the pups should not have been a problem at all. It is possible that because of her age she couldn't fully dilate. Also, her uterus was not strong enough. There is no way that I would have got the other two out. I am very lucky that only the third pup died and the fourth one came out very healthy. The vet had tried for some time to get the third pup put with absolutely no success. When I did an internal, it was just one foot that was trying to come down during the contractions (breech). It wasn't even going into the birth canal. I saw the puppy after, and it was probably about the same size as the first pup, so it should have been able to descend. So it is probably due to age and muscle weakness. I just thank God that she is doing so well. He was definitely listening to me that night!
