From what you have shared about Carlo, I can tell he is a fighter, and he is loved very, very much.
My bullmastiff had cancer, and we were able to treat him with chemo for two years with a very good quailty of life. Chemo really doesn't seem to effect most dogs the way it does humans. He did have about 8 months of remission (so only monthly rechecks no treatments during that period) between the 6 month protocols too. I don't think you can overestimate the importance of a good diet and supplements too.
