I recommend getting a cat as the second pet because 1) the dog will have a friend to play with when you aren't at home, 2) they wont encourage the dog to bark, i.e. one dog hears something and starts to bark, which causes the 2nd dog to bark, then you have a couple of yappers, and you cant hear yourself think, and 3) you still have the freedom to take your little dog everywhere you go. Of course this all depends on your specific dog, not all little dogs are yappers, and not all dogs can stand to be around cats. But that was just my 2 cents...oh and I really hope you dont pick your puppy up before 12 weeks, I get that we get excited about bringing home cute little puppies, but I didnt get mine till he was 14 weeks, and I think it was a good move on my part. He adjusted better, and he is great in his crate at night (no barking, whining, yelping, etc.)
