i don't know a whole lot, not even an iota of what so many others on this forum know, but from what i understand, picking them up when they're doing something you don't like is rewarding bad behavior. some folks have tried pennies in a can, keys, etc. you want her to understand that if she barks, there will be a negative consequence ... i'm guessing from her wagging her tail at you, she's not really getting it
it kinda sounds like she is protecting her property (you!!)
my girl barely barks (thank god), but the few times she did, i loudly whispered "shhhhtt!!! no bark!!!" she immediately stopped. she understands that i don't like it....
