Joey does this too, but never on my husband or me. Whenever it gets annoying, we just say "Joey!!", and he pretty much just stops, lays down, and gives us a look like, "come on, I was trying to get more comfy, you jerks!". I think my dog has ocd...he also has to do like 10 prep jumps every time he gets on the couch. Anyways...I would say that he doesn't have to always stop, I think it's one of the things that is instinct - wild dogs do it in their dens, too. I would say that if he's doing it somewhere he's not allowed, he needs to be told no, and moved. Eventually I think he will get the point and learn where that is and isn't allowed
