are they the tiny little burs or are they big? usually a slicker brush and a comb help get the tiny ones out. If they are bigger and cause some serious knotting on this chest/belly then its easier to shave his underside. no one will see it and he will be more comfortable. Please do not use scissors to cut out the mats. i've seen way too many accidents from owners cutting their dogs with the scissors and the dogs then needing stitches/staples to close the holes.

i don't think there is anything wrong with cutting down a puppy short. they look cute and i prefer to do this instead of demating a young dog. it causes less stress on the dog and the groomer. who cares what other people think, as long as you love him.
