This is exactly the same age it happened to me. I am 49 and haven't had a period in about 5 years,already through with the night sweats and hot flashes and I never did any hormone replacements. My grandmother and mother both went through the "change" early too. It was rough for a couple of years, but now it is sure something I don't miss.
I would go to Gyn. and make sure nothing is wrong.
