I've used Sentinel of 4 dogs (one Maltese and three Yorkies), and I've never seen any sort of side effect. That doesn't guarantee that you won't, though.

Out of these four dogs, I've had the Maltese the longest ... 14 years. I've never had a tick on any of them, I guess I have just never had them in an area where they would be prone to pick up ticks. If I ever see a tick (yuck, yuck, yuck), I would probably change out their meds to prevent that but so far I haven't had the need.
