I bought the book, too. From what I've gathered from it, they don't need to be in a crate, just confined to a small area (like a kitchen or bathroom). The author makes a good point in the beginning of the book- we confine infants to playpens during the time we aren't sitting right beside them. It's no different for dogs.

Of course, ask me in a day or two and I may feel differently.
