sadly we can only do so much in trying to help as we can only try to direct the owner in the right direction and the rest is up to the owner

My rule of thumb in Sick and Injured is to always suggest a vet. Even for simple sounding things. Sadly, many people post online because they are trying to avoid spending money and that can be deadly for a pup. One thing to advise someone who has been to a vet about how to help their pup and quite another to advise them when no diagnosis has been made. It is scary to me when I see that happen. Most people who post regularly don't do that...they do advise a vet.
