What kind of brush are you using? That makes a difference too. I was using a regular metal tooth comb before and it was breaking a lot of the hairs. Basically breaking the mats out, instead of untangling them. Now I use a Madan brush from mimimomo and for when I get to a mat I use one of those rotating metal tooth combs, helps to get out the mat without tearing out the hair.
