Roger on the rabies issue. That has been reported in the county we live in. Basically, if I see a fox in the middle of the day, I get out of the area as quickly as possible. If its at dusk, when they are most active, I have not been as quick to stop the stare down, but we do disengage (usually the fox runs away after staring at us for a minute or two)..

Besides that, I would never leave my yorkies unattended in the yard, although some neighbors do leave their yorkies (and other little dogs) in their yards. There are plenty of outside cats about as well. I can only assume the foxes are feeding on squirrel, chipmunks, rabbits and other wild life (or trash). You have to have a great deal of respect for a carnivore that has to forage for itself every day.
