Now no need to start a flame war, just asking a question. Even my wife and I disagree on this topic as I feel years ago she kept our Golden at the time alive at least a year past when he should have been put to peace.

I also can't help but agreeing with Momma Dog. For the dog to be helped, why does it have to wind up with a different family? My personal feeling is, if you can't afford something, do not buy it. If you can't maintain it, do not buy it.
Ann,

If you don't mind, I'll answer the ole retired Marine's question.

When is it time to put a sick animal down? When you know that the animal has no quality of life. When each and every treatment only provides a temporary fix. Most of us tend to put off the enevitable for our own benefit. Our emotions come into play. I've done it, but have learned to look into their eyes and somehow they tell me when it's time to let them go.

You've answered Mommadog's question in your last sentence.
