I have learned the hard way as well. I just had Cali's teeth cleaned
2 weeks ago. She is 7 years old and her breath was getting so bad
that no one wanted her up in their face. Her teeth were getting
pretty brown. I've tried a lot to clean them with a tooth brush
which she totally hates. Anway. They were cleaned 2 weeks
ago by a vet and she had to have 2 teeth removed. She has
recovered wonderfully. No more bad breath and she's running
around and playing like she did as a puppy. I wish I would have
done this a long time ago. I'm now trying to get her to like
having her teeth brushed. Not going to be easy but it has
to be done. Good luck to all that are going through the
