Congratulations on your new puppy. I wish I could remember who it was I saw at an obedience seminar, about positive training methods, so I could give her credit, but she showed how easy it was to leash train a puppy to walk nicely on a leash by using a long spoon, or yard stick (for a YT). What you do is put something yummy on the end of the spoon that the puppy can lick off, I use peanut butter with no additives. Put the puppy on the ground, with his collar and leash on and let him lick the spoon as you start to walk. Praise, praise, praise. Slowly start lifting the spoon up intermittently, as you walk. Put the spoon down if the puppy starts acting funny so he can lick it. Only do this for a couple minutes, and after a couple sessions, your puppy will be leash trained without hysterics. This method has always worked for me with puppies I've fostered.
