If you really want it to look as good as the rest of your remodeled kitchen, go to the extra trouble to get that wallpaper down. Use a steamer and scrape, then sand, then prime.

If you don't have a steamer of any kind, keep up with a rag dipped in hot water.

I have been through this in old houses many times. It's a drag, but the results are worth the extra effort.
