Since the breeding period of 9 days has been brought up again - WHEN should I consider these pups overdue? Having them too overdue really scares me for both him and her, it can be really dangerous if they go too long.
I hope you do not think I was being critical about breeding over a 9 day period, it is not something that I would do, but I was only trying to be helpful. Myra Savant Harris in her book "Canine Reproduction and Whelping" states that all puppies are born at 63 days after the egg has been released. This can happen before, during or after the time of mating, and is relatively hard to detect the exact time even with sophisticated testing, hence there is a variation with dates if one takes the first day of mating to calculate the due date. Very few, if any dogs, in her opinion are ever overdue. Hope this helps.
