It's like instant messaging. Just type what you want to say in a box, hit enter and it sends it to the other person instantly. They do the same. Voila! You are chatting away with each other. If the other person is online and their Skype program is open, they will receive your message instantly. I've sent messages to my D-I-L in Italy and there are times she doesn't reply. Not sure if she just doesn't want to talk to me or if she isn't online.
Also, my son (who's in Afghanistan) has a number through Skype. All we have to do is use our regular phone and call that number to talk to him. I'm not sure how this is set up, though.
