I would definately block the spaces between the spindles. Believe me if you don't, you could lose her very quickly. My elderly aunt's dog fell like that and broke her back, and couldn't walk anymore, she also didn't live very long after that. So, please, please, get some netting, or something and close it off.
They are so rumbuncious and it only takes a seconed for a tragedy to happen! PLEASE do this!
