They're called dewclaws, and they can catch or snag on things and cause lots of pain. Ask your vet to look at them the next time you're in and see if he/she thinks they need to be removed. Some dewclaws are small enough that they don't require removal.
I had my little foster boy's removed a couple of months ago and it wasn't that expensive. His were huge, though.
