Gosh, that's a tough one. Sometimes kids are intimidating to dogs. They have all that energy and they're loud and make quick movements. Something must've spooked him and I assume you don't have kids yourself so he doesn't have a lot of positive experiences to fall back on. If it were me, I would have the kids come in and ignore him, be very low key, and just toss a piece of cooked chicken to him. Then have them just sit and every so often toss him a piece of the chicken and see how he does. Of course, I would be sure he is leashed and I'd probably pick a little bit of an older child who understands and not sure if you know anyone like that.... Aside from that, maybe a trainer as this could become a serious problem. Maybe others will have better advice.
