Personally, I have a lot of things from my mother-in-law that I treasure simply because they were hers. Please let us know your daughter-in-law's reaction; I'm very curious to find out.

When my mother-in-law died she left a few pieces of jewelry and some loose pearls from a beautiful necklace that had broken. They were perfectly matched cultured pearls. I made each of her granddaughters a bracelet out of the pearls, combining them with their birthstones and some silver beads, etc. I also made one for her grandson's wife. Her granddaughters were all thrilled with the bracelets as a memory of their grandmother. The grandson's wife looked at it and said "oh" and never another word was spoken nor have I ever seen her wear it. So, go figure. I was a little hurt by it but I'm still close with this girl and have never discussed it with her. Once a gift is given, it's given, and that's the end of it IMO. I'm thinking that she just didn't have the connection that the other girls had with mom and I should have asked her first.
