Dear Patti,
Thank you for contacting my office with your concerns about pet breeders. I always have and always will support the humane treatment of all pets and am committed to working with members of the General Assembly to protect our animal friends.
Based on issues that you raised, today my staff worked with Rep. Lisa Dugan to draft and introduce a bill to improve the licensing rules for breeders in Illinois. House Bill 6854sets a higher standard for people seeking to obtain pet breeder licenses from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. It will allow the State to consider certain past criminal convictions when issuing breeder licenses.
I have also been working closely with the Illinois Humane Society and am in full support of House Bill 5772, which would create stricter disclosure requirements for all pet store owners in our State. These bills protect our pets and empower consumers with the information they need to make smart decisions about animal ownership.
Once again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me about this important issue. Citizen participation is critical to the democratic process in this state and today, your voice was heard.
Sincerely,
Pat Quinn

That's great! I really think if we make our voices heard we can bring about change!
