Just like humans try to take just the tips of the hair off. Then use a good quality conditioner. Never brush dry hair - use a conditioning spray.
Invest in Vellus Satin cream
www.vellus.com - they have a sampler kit for about $20 you can order. This cream is a wonder for the weblike mats. Apply it to weblike mat. Use your fingers to spread web apart. Then from the tips of the hair working towards the body you could use your wooden pin brush.
Now for a "knot" get any rat tailed comb. begin to use the tip of rattail to gently lift out strand by strand the hair that is in a knot.
