The vet said she has only seen 2-3 cases as bad as Cleo before and they were all in the setting of major trauma; broken bones, bruising, abdominal organ injury, etc. (which Cleo had none of) I consider myself fairly "hardened" as I have worked in a busy trauma center for over 12 years, but I find my eyes welling up with tears as I write this. All I can think of is her little tail wagging when we whispered into her ear as she struggled to get oxygen, which even the ventilator could not provide enough for her tiny lungs.

Our vet thinks #1 most likely cause is poisoning, but from what is the question. I deal with a lot of human poisoning, but this is out of my league. Our vet was fantastic through everything, but really can't tell me what did this.

Does anyone have any kind of experience/knowledge with anything like this??
I hate to blame anyone or any company, but has anyone had their Yorkie become ill/sick from granular fertilizer?? Our lawn care company applied granules to our lawn, which Cleo had access too, without letting us know!! This was 2 days before Cleo became violently sick. Of course their web site maintains all of their products are perfectly safe for pets..... but do they test their products on 3 lb. Yorkies?? With 3 young kids here in the house, we've had things poisoned proofed for a long time before Cleo came into our life and that is the only potential source we can logically think of.

We would appreciate any thoughts/ideas. I do have tissue samples and blood tubes but am really not sure what/where to send. Maybe this is would turn into a fruitless quest??
I am so sorry for your loss. What a tragic event! My heart goes out to you and your family as you try to deal with the grief of such a sudden loss of Cleo. Some things I can think of are....
1) Yes some lawn chemicals can be fatal....but I have no way of telling you how to check.....I heard one time of the lawn guys making a mistake with their chemical application.....it also ended in the death of a dog. You may can have a sample of your lawn tested....I would certainly call the company!

2) is anyone in your family....even your extended family taking a drug such as warfin (sp)....a blood thinner used usually for any heart condition....even one pill can be fatal to a Yorkie.....this actually happened to a friend of mine....a visiting relative dropped a pill on the floor and didn't realize it until the Yorkie became fatally ill like Cleo...the symptoms were the same.

3) she may have been posioned "accidently" by a neighbor. If you neighbor has treated for rats with rat posion (which is normally a blood thinner)....it is possible for the rat to enter your yard before it died......if Cleo ate or played with such a dead animal....she "could" become posioned too.

Almost any University Vet School can do tissue cultures for foreign chemicals....or you can use a lab. But most Univ vet schools are accustomed to doing this type of testing. Ask your vet.

I hope this helps some....I hope you find some answers. If it were me....I would certainly want to know why ?? It will not bring Cleo back....but could provide you with some peace of mind. God speed to you....and again I am so sorry you lost Cleo. I am so very sad.....I too have tears just thinking of Cleo and what you have experienced.
