That person was trying to make a sell. Of course by products is bad. It's bad for us why wouldn't it be bad for them? Most are fillers and fats so they have no real nutritional value, grocery store dog foods as well as most of the foods carried by Petsmart and Petco are basically junk food.
As for your coat question, your babies coat sounds like my boys. His coat is a cottony coat. No straight hair for him except for on his face.
