My puppy doesn't travel much ---but puppy pads go with him every place he goes. And, whoever might have him is instructed to make sure he knows where they are and to take him to them at least once an hour. To date, he has used them at my sister's house and at my friend's house.
I am also taking him outside - where he pees, of course - and he knows this is good.
I had a friend whose dog was so well puppy pad trained that it wouldn't go outside. It waited until it got back in the house where the puppy pads were. I'm trying to teach my dog that he needs to go on the puppy pad in the house and that he can also go outside.
Then - I had a friend whose dog got in so much trouble for peeing in the wrong place (inside) - that it refused to go outside when she had it on a leash. It was just too close to her and thought it would be in trouble. If it was loose from her outside, it would go when it got a distance away from her (like she couldn't see it or something!)
We need to be so consistent training our dogs that it is always a problem when things change for them --at least when they are young.
My one dog was so well trained that if any dog or cat had an accident in the house --she would hide under the bed for hours.
