He has to learn where he needs to plant his feet when he comes down the stairs. To help him learn how to do it, start from the bottom of the steps. Let him come down from last step from the ground. Do that a couple of times and then move one step up and let him come down from that. Keep moving one step up until he is at the top of the stairs. You may have to teach him "easy" or "slowly" on the way so he will not try to come down the stairs at warp speed(at least not until he know where is footing is).
