It's really up to you, i personally prefer private classes. Me and my dog can learn and progress at our speed and spend time on the things that I find the most important.
Socialization is very important however, I take my dogs to a lot of places and even the dog park, so I feel I have the socialization down on my own, however for people who find it harder to find places for their dogs to interact with others using group classes can be very useful.
Good luck in whatever you choose and just remember the most important thing is that the two of you have fun and use the opportunity to create a bond.
