You can start a heartworm preventative before you leave (to make sure there will be no reactions when you are away from your regular vet). Then give it every thirty days until a couple-few months after returning. Interceptor, Heartgard, and Heartgard Plus are some good ones.
Frontline Plus is good. It is not the equivalent of Advantage. Advantage is fine, but doesn't do anything for ticks. Advantix does but that contains permethrin which is a bit controversial. Revolution does just about everything, but many people don't like it because we don't think it does anything too well for a lot of dogs. The major problem is if it's given for heartworms and happens not to work...... A lot of vets are not liking it right now...
