My Ruby's coat is the same, it's a fragile silk coat, will get only so long, is very thin, fine hair. Sounds like you're already doing everything I would recommend, a good food, the coconut oil, but I DO use conditioner on Ruby. I use less and water it down a little - IDK if it protects her hair but would think so, as it's not dry and prone to breaking from being brittle, dry hair.
