Well, you don't want to pull it too tight when putting a band in the hair. I cut out the bands so they don't pull. You can use ouchless bands, too. They are easy on the hair. Neither do I leave them in all of the time. Now, someone whose little one has really long hair would have no other option, but I don't keep my little one's hair that long. I keep it at a length where she can either wear it up or down. Hope this helps.
