You may just be feeding him too much... mine only eat 1/2 cup per day... 1 cup sounds like a lot... he may be growing out of the puppy stage where he needs a lot of food to keep up with his growing.
I like to have mine on a kibble that they will eat plain with no add ins...but you can still add things in like cottage cheese, green beans, yogurt (plain), sweet potatoes.
