You're not - no one is. It's a known fact that hawks will try - and even if they don't fly off with a pet - the talons alone can kill them...
There's been a few people who went thru this - it was awful to read....one story in particular I've never forgotton - her yorkie wasn't just 10 feet from her and scooped up. That is horribly traumatic ......
I wish I had advise other than take a small area - fence it off and cover it - but like you said - it defeats the purpose of a yard.....I hope you find answers
