As for protecting our little furbutts from the hawks they suggested setting up bright colored windsock's and using lighted flashing collars (also suggested by maryeverette). Mesh netting that is used in orchards to protect the fruit on fruit trees, however, the hawks could get caught in it and become injured if not done strategically.

I wonder how many windsocks's you would have to have to be effective? I have quite a big back yard, but would put a gazillion out there to protect my kidz...How and why does that deter the hawks? I'm going to check into those lighted flashing collars, although, in the evening, I could leash them, and take them out...It's just in the daytime they, desparately, want to run around in the back yard...
