When I first decided to volunteer at the no kill shelter by me I wondered if I would be able to stand the heartbreak. On my day of training I wanted to run out but stuck it out. After volunteering for the past year, you see so many sad things but also see so many get adopted, the love of the way underpaid staff who give them extra attention and truly care about each animal in their care. The first thing I do when I go in is check the board to see which dogs and cats went home that week. I absolutely could not go there if this was a kill shelter. I try and donate as often as I can because all shelters/rescues are in dire need with the economy the way it is. I pray I am never in a position to have to rehome any of my babies, but I am sure many people who have dropped their dog or cat off never thought they would have to. Then there are the ones who just dump them without a second thought because they are too much bother now. It always amazes me at how loving and forgiving these dogs and cats can be after being dropped in an unfamiliar, scary place. |
