When we are gone for more than a few minutes we crate our dogs. They actually like it. Most of the time if they aren't sleeping on our laps they go lay down in their crates. When we are leaving or getting ready to leave most of the time they head for their crates before we tell them but if not we just have to say OK crates and there they go.
We do this to protect the house and them as well.
