If you change their food every time they refuse to eat, they know that they can train you to go find a new food.

I take in many pups and never go through the picky stuff that I see so often posted.
So true, we train out dogs to be picky, but it's easy to do with a Yorkie. If they don't eat one or two meals, most of us panic, and we start giving them tastier human foods to make sure they don't starve. Joey did this around 6 mouths old, but I finally found a dog food he would eat, and stopped offering any tastier substitutes. Human kids go through the same thing at around age two, and if we don't cave into their demands and just provide nutritious fare, they don't become overly picky either. I think the way you suggest, "I simply put the food down twice/day and give them 10 - 15 minutes to eat. Then, I pick up the bowls," is perfect, but when they are under 4 pounds, it isn't as cut and dry because some of them do have low blood sugar problems, so maybe putting the food down more frequently or as Joey's breeder suggested, free feeding, just don't give any treats.
