It's really just a matter of preference....some here cut around the eyes and some don't. I like having it long and keeping it tied up. Once it's cut it seems like it takes forever to grow out. Putting vasaline to help tame it while it grows out is a good idea if you don't want to cut it. I personally don't think it's any harder keeping the eyes clean with it long
