This is a tough situation, and as someone who sells online and is constantly shipping things, I know these kinds of things happen. It is actually the post office's responsibility, but since there was no insurance purchased, they will do nothing.

I know from first hand experience, that even if you purchase insurance, and the item shows up damaged, they will not pay you your claim unless the box is pretty much mangled. If it is a fragile or delicate item, for example that could be broken when dropped, but show no sign of damage on the box, they will not pay.

It is a tough call, bc you and the seller lost out on money on this bc of the post office. In the past, I have done the same, offer to split the charge with the buyer on another one. Even though you are out money, you will be out less than if you go with another company all together.
