Your method may be the best way, I didn't think of this when I started using the repeller, I really didn't think it would work. I've heard of so many WONDERFUL products that don't work. So I pointed it at him from about 10 feet away. It did work, but he saw it in my hand. The good news is because it's black, I can also point the phone or tv-romote at him and he'll stop barking.
