I think your bows are cute. My suggestion is to pull the centers in to make it more of a bow shape.

I prefer to use nonlatex bands on the backs of my bows.

I don't like the idea of a lighter near synthetic ribbon!! You can buy a container of Fray Check or other stop fraying material at a craft store or you could likely find it online.
