IMO (and I'm sure contrary to the opinion of many people on YT), small dogs should not be left outside alone. It's not safe in most areas of the US. And since somebody should be out there with them, I don't see the problem with a harness and tieout. So I don't really get the debate about it at all.
I will say -- it's VERY nice when we visit over at my dad's house with their fenced in yard and their 2 dogs. It definitely is different. When we go back home, we live on 3 acres and it's awkwardly shaped. There's also no way we could afford to fence the entire property.

Currently, you open my sliding glass door, and there's a big patio there, because I had wanted to get a bunch of expens, or chicken wire or something, and had a big square area he could just go out... but the porch kind of makes us not able to do that. So I have a retractable stake in the ground (it came with a 20 foot retractable leash) and that pretty much gave him no room, so I got a 50 foot nylon leash that I clip onto the 20 foot retractable, and it definitely gives him space. We're able to play frisbee and stuff with him on it, but the leash is semi heavy to drag (for him) and... it's just not the same.

Again, I considered the invisible fence but I dunno.... I probably will end up not doing it.
