When I saw this and read POP, I was thinking stud or daddy doggie... LOL
Population in my town is 66,327, but the 'township' consists of a lot of smaller neighborhoods like Megan's.
NJ is decieving because in most of the state (especially metro NYC where we are) there isn't any open space between towns, so there is no way to tell when you've left one town and entered another. An expression I had never heard until I moved to Jersey is 'town center', which refers to a 'Main Street area' amid the suburbia. As a whole, we're pretty heavily populated...
Which makes me want to do a google on state size and population. I bet NJ is way at the top.

As congested as it is in Northern Jersey, South Jersey is actually very agricultural. Hence the state name 'The Garden State'.
Back to google I go....
