I was thinking the same thing about poor nutrition and possibly leather ear. When I asked the vet about Truman he suggested antifungal creme and it not only worked but they healed and before he passed away his ears had fully healed and GREW hair back. My vet suggested human antifungal like you would use for athletes foot. At first they hair that grew in didn't really stick and was easily pulled out but over time it became stronger.
