Okay, here's a little background--Kelli was fine as of yesterday morning, around lunchtime she started shaking and was crouched down as if she was in trouble. She would also slightly yelp whenever she barked and acted as if it HURT her to do so. I monitored her for a few hours to see how she was doing and she didn't seem to be getting better (she was panting a little bit but we believe that was from stress), called the vet and they told us to bring her right up.
Well, Kelli has allergies so we had to go up anyway to get her prescription refilled, so we did that at the same time. The vet thoroughly checked her, I mean EVERYTHING from her heart to her lungs to her throat, EVERYthing. The vet gave her a pain shot (not sure WHY that was done when nothing was found to be wrong) and also gave us a prescription for an antibiotic, a rather strong one too. It's a liquid drop that she has to take 1ML of and THAT seemed excessive to me. She also had her anal glands drained as the Dr. said they were pretty full and at times that can cause them to be irritable.
So, we got her back home and she still acted as if she was scared/hurt/didn't feel well. We had given her the antibiotic and it just seemed to get worse. She woke up from a sound sleep PANTING. We took her outside and she tried 4 or 5 times to go poop...each time, nothing. We think maybe she was constipated/had an upset tummy, but we can't figure out why. We haven't changed her eating habits at all, nothing out of the ordinary has been given to her. She did throw up last night, as well. Around 130 this morning, she got up and had to go potty and she pooped then. She woke up this morning and seemed to feel SO, SO much better. She ate her breakfast, also had her morning treat, and was giving kisses and lovin' to everyone. We had to give her the antibiotic again, so we did that and about an hour or so later, maybe not even THAT long she started panting again and acting as if she didn't feel well. She ALSO seemed to have trouble walking. We put her on the couch and she laid down and wouldn't budge. Kelli's just not like that, plus her tongue was hanging out of her mouth at this point.
So, we took her to the Emergency Vet Hospital and they've had her since 1030. They've done all kinds of tests on her, took her blood, did xrays, they can't find anything. But I'm getting conflicting reports. The Dr. at the EVH said it could be anything from her brain, to an inner ear infection, even down to her heart. Plus, another thing is after he examined her initially, he put her on the floor and Kelli had a hard time walking, she fell quite a bit. This was not long after she was given her second dose of medicine. BEFORE we gave her the medicine she was running around, although slowly, and jumping, too. We JUST had her checked at her NORMAL vets yesterday and they said she was fine. This is a vet we've used for all of our animals for about 16 years now. I'm a little bit miffed over them giving her an antibiotic when nothing was wrong (we had to see a different dr up there because our regular dr was on vacation). The EVH asked to keep Kelli for a couple hours so we came home, we called up a little bit ago and they want to keep her till around 5pm. The Dr. said she seems to be doing much better, although she still wobbles when she walks a little bit. But the Dr. feels that could be too that she's not sure where we are and she's scared.
I'm sorry to give so much info, I'm just really wondering if this was a TINY problem (such as an upset tummy) that was made WORSE by that heavy dose of antibiotics. It's a stronger one than she's used to taking, too. The Dr. at the EVH kinda discredited our belief that it could be the med, but I'm not sure I understand why she was okay this morning before taking it. It's frustrating me to death that two Dr's can't find a thing wrong with her, and the one Dr. prescribed meds that she probably didn't even need. PLUS gave her a shot on top of all of that. Anyone experienced the scared, shaking, wobbly, headachey symptoms that Kelli seemed to have in a dog that had an ear infection or an upset stomach?
We're probably going to take her to the normal vet tomorrow because we're just not sure what else to do. I'm hoping her REGULAR vet will be there. Any advice or experiences would be so appreciated, thank you. I'm just worried sick about our little girl.
